Is Wessam Abou Ali set to leave Al-Ahly?
Following the striker's stellar Club World Cup, could a big money transfer move be in the works?
Transfer rumors dominate the headlines on the back pages during the long summer months without football. This summer, it seems that Wessam Abou Ali could be the subject of a multi-million dollar move away from Al-Ahly.
The destination, however, remains very much unknown. The Palestine international joined Al-Ahly in January 2024 and was an immediate success nabbing the Egyptian League Golden Boot with 18 goals and four assists in 19 appearances.
His sophomore season was blighted by injury but he still managed to finish with ten goals and three assists in 16 league appearances. He notched 15 goals and four assists across 29 appearances in all competitions before signing off for the 2024/25 season with a perfect hat trick against Porto.
Since joining Al-Ahly from Allsvenskan side Sirius IK, Wessam Abou Ali has scored 36 goals and provided eight assists in 48 appearances. That type of form was bound to attract interest and the fact that he had one of his best performances of the season at the Club World Cup only serves to generate more interest.
Possible Destinations
When discussing possible transfers it is important to note that Al-Ahly hold all the cards. Wessam Abou Ali has said: "I am good here, my salary is good here and I am happy." He reportedly told Ahmed Shobier that he will do whatever the club wants but that if he leaves he wants to go to a "big club."
Abou Ali's contract with The Club of the Century runs through June 2028. He was initially purchased for $2 Million with Sirius reportedly due a percentage of the following transfer fee.
It is widely expected that Al-Ahly will not let Wessam Abou Ali go unless they receive a record breaking transfer fee of $10 Million or more.
According to Micky Jnr, a South African Football Journalist, there are several club interested in the player with New York Red Bulls reportedly launching $6 Million bid for the striker.
A source within Al-Ahly said that while there has been interest and discussion they have "yet to receive a formal offer."
Al-Arabi of the Qatar Stars League as well as a Bundesliga club are the other sides mentioned as having interest.
